TOBACCO CONTROL PROGRAMME:

VANI SANTHA, Jaipur is involved in the implementation of a project named “Building India through its Schools Initiatives in Health and Education” in Association with Ambuja Education Institute (AEI) in Dholpur district of Rajasthan. The main objectives of the project are:

  • Establish the TFS (Tobacco Free School), better implementation of COTPA (Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003)
  • Educating stakeholders resulting in increased awareness of the provision Making Tobacco Free Schools and Villages across INDIA.
  • Empowering local stakeholders for Tobacco Free Schools and Tobacco Control law 2003.
  • Sensitizing Policy Makers for urgent implementation of COTPA.
  • Building Sustainable Tobacco Control Programs.

The project would help in sensitizing of students, teachers, trainers and other stake holders (police, health functionaries, etc.) on the ill-effects of tobacco; increase awareness of section 6(a) and 6(b) of COTPA, 2003 in schools and adoption; in order to establish Tobacco Free Schools; help in establishing Tobacco Free Schools as per the guideline of CBSE Board; formation of District Level Tobacco Control Committee to continue the work to create tobacco-free districts; create a sustainable system that encourages local NGOs to start tobacco control activity in rural areas and create replicable models for other parts of India and become the resource center for rural tobacco control in the country.

It has been planned, to make the project sustainable, to integrate tobacco control activities into the School Health Programme. In this regard co-ordination between the National Health Mission (NHM) and the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) has been developed for strengthening tobacco control activities at the school level.

Activities Undertaken: State Level Training

A state level training was organized, under chairmanship of Director, VANI SANSTHA for all PHC and UPHC staff including Medical officer, to train how to aware rural villagers/community stakeholder including male, female and children about “Say No To Tobacco” and Sensitization of villagers on the ill-effects of tobacco.

District Level Rallies and awareness generation:

VANI SANSTHA and Department of Health and Family welfare conducted joint rally at district level. In which ANM and PHM from PPP mode UPHC Sagarpara and UPHC Ondeila Road participated and made people aware through slogan and discussion with Cigarettes and Tobacco product shopkeepers. The team of members of VANI SANSTHA Jaipur, participated in student awareness generation meetings and also in district level rally. Scout and Guide team paraded on the occasion and Chief Guest PMO, spoke about the health hazard from use of Tobacco. He disseminated the information relating to the ill effects of tobacco on health of tobacco user and negative impacts on productivity. He is also motivated the tobacco users to say good bye to Tobacco.

Celebration of World No Tobacco Day 2019

VANI SANSTHA celebrated World No Tobacco Day 2019 with all 10 PHC and UPHC by organizing community awareness activity like rallies and meeting with villagers. A large number of villagers including male, female and children participated in these rallies and meetings and was celebrated like other festival. All villagers have pledged for “Say No to Tobacco”. Village Sarpanch and Head Teachers spoke about the health and economical hazard of use of Tobacco. Asha Workers and Anganwadi Workers planned activity and supported in identifying persons who use Tobacco products and conducted health check-ups and make them aware of risk of use of at Tobacco.

In these rallies and meeting, on World No Tobacco Day 2019, around 2000 participants participated. VANI SANTHA has participated to its best to propagate the message of World No Tobacco Day 2019.

State Level Workshop

On January 23, 2020 a workshop was organised at the state level. The objective of the workshop was to strengthen (both in number and skill) master trainers. Therefore, persons working in health sector and those working directly with community were invited. The workshop started with motivational song to motivate the participants for their active participation in various sessions to follow and motivate them that with their skill and knowledge can inspire the smokers/ tobacco users to say "NO TO TOBACCO".

The sessions were conducted by Mr. Deepak Patil and MS. Kalpana Pillai of Salam Bombay Foundation, Dr. Sunil Sharma, Director, Vani Sanstha and Ms. Shuchi Kaushik of Vani Sanstha.

Mr. Deepak Patil of Salam Bombay Foundation have explained about reasons/ circumstances which led to use of tobacco, ill effect of tobacco, how to get rid of use of tobacco and various legal provisions of COPTA. The participants were asked to right slogan to promote Tobacoo Free Schools, Villages and Society. Some of the slogans written by participants and glimpses of the workshop are as follow:

  1. "दारू तो दरिद्रता लाता गुटखा लाता बीमारी। भाईओ इन से दूर रहो मत दिखलाओ इनसे यारी।"
  2. "पान पत्ती (गुटखा ) छोडकर खाओ सेब अनार। उम्र बढाने का सपना करलो साकार।"
  3. "तम्बाखू का सेवन अच्छी नहीं है बात। पैसा और जान दोनो जाते, कुछ नही आता हाथ।"
  4. "तम्बाकू जो चाबयेगा अपना जीवन गवायेगा।"
  5. "तम्बाकू का अन्जाम मौत को सीधा पैगाम।"
  6. "तम्बाकू की आदत कैंसर और मौत को दावत।"
  7. "गुटखा तम्बाकू और दारू ये सब है बीमार करने वाले कांगरू।"
  8. "हम सब ने ठाना है स्वस्थ गांव बनाना है गुटखा तम्बाकू को दूर भगाना है।"
  9. "जो खाता है तम्बाकू गुटखा यार रहता है हमेशा बीमार।"
  10. "गुटखा तम्बाकू का ना करे उपयोग यही हमारी पुकार। जन जन का हो कल्याण यही हमारा पैगाम।"
  11. "तम्बाकू को जिस ने अपनाया उस ने मौत को गले लगाया परिवार के लाया अँधियारा"

Mr. Deepak Patil of Salam Bombay through games/ activities convinced participants that they can convince the user about ill effects of use of tobacco in any form and motivate them to say good bye to Tobacco.

Training of Master Trainers at Jaipur

State Leveling Training of Trainers at Jaipur:

On February 12, 2020 a State Level Training of Trainers for Tobacco Free Educational Institutions was organized in Jaipur. This State Level Training was organized with collaboration of State Tobacco Control Cell, DMHS and Salaam Mumbai Foundation. From all the 33 districts, two officials of Education department (preferably head teachers) and one District level official of Health department or district tobacco control department have participated in addition to state level officials of Health, Education, Volunteer Organizations and State Tobacco Control Cell. In all around 150 officials attended the State Level Training of Trainers for Tobacco Free Educational Institutions.

The objective of the workshop was to strengthen (both in number and skill) Trainers in each district to increase the strength of trainers at all levels to provide the momentum to transform all educational institutions as Tobacco Free Institutions. Persons working in Education and Health sector are involved in the Training of Trainers because they are persons working directly with community and their advice is being accepted and followed by the community.

The sessions were conducted by Mr. Deepak Patil of Salaam Mumbai, Mr. Narendra Singh and Ms Sangeeta of Rajasthan State Tobacco Control Cell and Ms. Shuchi Kaushik of Vani Sanstha managed the whole show/ program by conducting all the sessions.

Ms Sangeeta of Rajasthan STCC has explained in details the various initiatives taken by Cell to control the use of Tobacco and Mr. Narendra Singh of Rajasthan STCC explained about initiatives taken by state authorities to make tobacco free educational institutions.
